What is a sales funnel? A simple guide with examples

Most people who visit your website won’t buy on their first visit. A sales funnel is how you stay in touch with them until they’re ready. Here’s how funnels work, with real examples, and how to build your first one.

What is a sales funnel?

A sales funnel is the step-by-step journey a person takes from first hearing about your business to becoming a paying customer. It’s called a funnel because many people enter at the top, and fewer move through each stage until a smaller group buys. A good funnel guides as many people as possible through each step.

The four stages of a sales funnel

1. Awareness

People discover you for the first time, through a social media post, an ad, a Google search or a recommendation. Your goal here is to grab attention and offer something useful.

2. Interest

They want to learn more. You offer something valuable, such as a free guide, checklist, quiz or discount, in exchange for their email address or WhatsApp number. This is called a lead magnet.

3. Decision

You build trust with helpful follow-up messages: tips, case studies, testimonials and answers to common objections. They compare you with alternatives and start to see you as the right choice.

4. Action

They buy, book or sign up. A clear offer, a simple checkout and a reason to act now, such as a limited-time bonus, help them take the final step.

Sales funnel examples

A local beauty salon

An Instagram ad offers 20% off a first treatment. Visitors claim it by entering their phone number on a landing page. They receive a WhatsApp message with the code and a booking link, plus a reminder three days later if they haven’t booked.

A business coach

A LinkedIn post promotes a free “90-day growth plan” template. People download it with their email, then receive five emails over two weeks with practical advice and client stories, ending with an invitation to book a free strategy call.

An online clothing store

A first-time visitor gets a pop-up offering free delivery on their first order. If they add something to their basket but don’t check out, they receive a reminder email and see retargeting ads showing the exact item.

Remember: the funnel only works if every link is connected. An ad without a landing page, or a lead magnet without follow-up emails, lets interested people slip away.

How to build your first funnel without expensive software

  1. Pick one product or service to focus on.
  2. Create a lead magnet your ideal customer would genuinely want.
  3. Build a simple landing page with one clear goal: getting the sign-up.
  4. Write three to five follow-up emails or messages that build trust and end with an offer.
  5. Drive traffic with social media posts or a small ads budget.
  6. Track the numbers at each stage and improve the weakest step first.

Many email marketing and website platforms offer free or low-cost starter plans that are enough to launch a first funnel.

How to tell if your funnel is working

Track three numbers: how many visitors sign up, how many sign-ups become customers, and how much it costs you to win each customer. If lots of people visit but few sign up, improve your offer or landing page. If many sign up but few buy, improve your follow-up messages.
